St Edward’s is launching a new scheme offering two state school pupils currently in Year 10 the chance to study the International Baccalaureate Diploma at St Edward’s for free.
There are only about 100 schools in the UK that offer the IB as an alternative to A Levels, and it is not a programme which is readily accessible to state school pupils in the local area. In the IB’s 50th anniversary year, this scheme will offer two pupils who might not otherwise have the chance the opportunity to experience everything that the IB and St Edward’s have to offer.
Dr Deborah Outhwaite, an experienced Teacher Educator at the University of Warwick, whose research and publications specialise in the International Baccalaureate, believes the opportunity to experience the IB is not one to be passed up: ‘As a former specialist sixth form teacher for 12 years, I have spent the last decade studying how the IB’s Diploma Programme is delivered. I believe that it offers significant opportunities for Sixth Formers to develop skills in a wide range of areas, that prepare them for both Higher Education and the world beyond, as genuine global citizens.
‘Unfortunately the IB Diploma is now rarely available in the state sector, so this funded opportunity to study at St Edwards is a fantastic opportunity for any current Year 10 state school students who are keen to broaden their horizons and to keep all subject options open.’
The scheme is being launched today in partnership with The Oxford Times, and those wishing to apply can pick up an application form in this week’s edition of the paper.
Parents of applicants will need to submit a 300-word supporting statement on why their child should win one of the Bursaries, along with a fully completed entry form and a recent school report.
Applicants must have been born between 1st September 2002 and 31st August 2003, and currently be in Year 10 in a state school in Oxfordshire, living close enough to St Edward’s to make being a day pupil at the School viable.
To be eligible, family income should not exceed around £50,000 net. Full details on the scheme and the eligibility requirements can be viewed here. The successful applicants will take up their places to join St Edward’s for the Sixth Form in September 2019. The deadline for applications is 15th October 2018.
